ISSEY MIYAKE is a fashion luxury brand that is founded in the philosophy of clothing made from “a Piece of Cloth,” a concept which explores not only the relationship between them. The philosophy has evolved and grown as have Miyake’s interests, always founded in innovative clothing combined with modern research and development.
In response to ISSEY MIYAKE’s brand identity and philosophy, their collection ‘Pleats Please’ was the inspiration for my design concept, Nexus. With that, this priject focuses on creating spatial elements utilizing my three design strategies; overlapping, wrapping around and offsetting. The implementation of one of my design strategies of ‘wrap around’ is acknowledged in my secondary program; the fashion runway, this creates a simple and comfortable circulation for the models to catwalk during an event.
Playing with a series of circles and curves through the use of voids, heights and feature displays consistently throughout the entire space, creating a continuity of flow which provides a unique user experience. My design statement “a connection or series of connections linking two or more things,” relates to my three design strategies.
For overlap, there will always be at least two circles on top of each other to create some sort of void. For wrap around, the connection between a mezzanine and a set of stairs will always be linked. Lastly for offset, voids made through offsetting will always be followed by a contrast of another feature display alongside it. With the use of black textured concrete walls, white staggered laminate floors as well as aluminium displays, chains, racks and shelves, this then produces a monochrome atmosphere within the space, which helps emphasise on the already-vibrant ISSEY MIYAKE products.
